Surviving Unturned: 5 Things You Need to Know
Surviving Unturned is actually easy. I’ve talked about how fun of a game it is before but it can really be frustrating if you don’t know what you’re doing. Sure you can treat it like a GTA game and start killing off every zombie you see. More often than not though, you’re bound to get killed on the spot if you did do that.
The game rewards smart players and yes once you’re able to craft your own weapons and traps, it becomes infinitely easier. With that said here are a couple of tips to help you in surviving Unturned.
Familiarize Yourself With the Map
The first thing you need to do is to explore the map you’re going to be playing in. Currently there are only two available maps, PEI and Arena. If you want an experience that’s more akin to MineCraft, Arena would be a great place to start. Otherwise, if you want to dive right in into the action PEI is where you want to be.
Familiarity with a map (e.g. items, player, and enenmy spawn points) will pay dividends later on in the game.
Pick Your Fights
The first time I played Unturned I immediately went to the nearest town and punched a couple of zombies. As expected I got my ass handed to me. You need to remember that this isn’t GTA or Watch Dogs. Even if you have a Maplestrike or a Magnum, these guns still won’t guarantee your safety. Engaging against zombies will only result in either your health deteriorating or you getting thirsty or hungry (or both). Your objective is to survive. You can worry about killing zombies once you’ve established a base of operations.
Crafting Is King
Instead of looking for guns, look for weapons/items that you can use for crafting. A good example of these would be the pickaxe. You can use it to mine for rocks and stones as well as to defend yourself. Sure, a Maplestrike or a Magnum is great for killing zombies but sometimes getting these weapons are exercises in futility. Build your own house first before you think of going up against the zombies in Unturned.
Pick Where You Spawn
One trick that I found to be particularly effective for surviving in Unturned, is to first play a game in the Arena map. You usually spawn in an area that looks like the Stonehenge and has lots of basic items and weapons. Pick up an ax or pickaxe first (or both if they’re available) and use these to gather resources (logs, rocks, stones, etc…) to build your own home. There are also animals in the forest that you can hunt using the bows and arrows found in the same area you spawned.
Play With A Friend
Having two heads as well as two pairs of hands and feet is undoubtedly better than having just one of each. Surviving in Unturned is more fun when you’re with a friend. Gathering resources and supplies for crafting can be a lot easier too. You can easily clear a whole town by having your friend kite away all the zombies while you forage for the supplies you need. Also if you’re tired of crafting, the both of you can have a deathmatch in the Arena with the weapons you’ve gathered.
